Books for your reading list suggested by Authorized Partners – Everything DiSC®

2021-04-27 by Vickie Maris Leave a Comment

Each networking breakout during the MindLab 2021 Conference started with a discussion question. While it’s not hard to get discussion rolling among a group of facilitators who are Authorized Partners – Everything DiSC® and The Five Behaviors® – Wiley brands, the assigned discussion question did provide for more focused conversation among our breakout group.

I’ve compiled my notes for you from the chat, and from additional conversations I held with other Partners during the event.

If you see your recommendations below, I invite you to elaborate in the comments.

If you have another book to add to the list, please also share your suggestions in the comments.

I’ve already purchased a couple of these books that were new to me, and look forward to what I’m going to learn.

Here are the book suggestions of our group of facilitators, consultants, speakers and coaches (several of the links below are affiliate links) …

From Robin …

Speed of Trust – Stephen M. R. Covey – to take a look at how trust infiltrates every transaction and relationship
Emotional Agility by Susan David – for ideas on mastering agility in times when you get derailed
Business Made Simple by Donald Miller – 60 daily readings to help move your career to the next level

From Darrell …
First Things First by Stephen R. Covey, A. Roger Merrill, Rebecca R. Merrill – about time management
Foreign to Familiar by Sarah A. Lanier – to develop better understanding of different cultures
Adrenalin & Stress by Dr. Archibald D. Hart – to help with managing stress

Terry suggested …
5 Levels of Leadership by John C. Maxwell – to learn leadership tools to help fuel success, grow your team and more

Nadine suggested …
7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey – marketed as the #1 most influential business book of the 20th century
Transitions by William Bridges – to let go of what used to be; a “guide for coping with life’s changes”

Dana suggested …
Coaching Questions: A Coach’s Guide to Powerful Asking Skills by Tony Stoltzfus – a handy reference of “asking tools” that can be used in one-on-one coaching or to keep a group discussion going while facilitating

Another book mentioned by several during the conversations of the week:
Atomic Habits – by James Clear – provides a framework for improving every day (#3 on Amazon charts at the time of this writing)

And two books suggested by blog author Vickie Maris …
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson – for learning to get results from simple steps taken in your daily life
The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results – by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan – to rein in the distractions and gain more productivity, improved use of time, and joy

Among the books you have read (or listened to) in the past year, which one would you like to add to this list and why? Please add to the discussion in the comments. Thank you for adding to the book reading list!

Mike Jackson discusses teamwork involved in field trials with English Pointer bird dogs

2019-09-11 by Vickie Maris Leave a Comment

In my conversation with Mike Jackson for Agile Digital Business, we take a departure from digital marketing and the transition of content to the digital realm, and talk teamwork and leadership.

Mike enjoys the sport of field trials and raising and training bird dogs. He has trained some of the best English Pointer dogs in the business and participates in field trials from the back of his Tennessee Walker horses.

Traveling throughout North America to compete in field trials

His travels take him throughout the USA and Canada as he competes in field trials. Prior to his retirement, Mike worked for the electric co-op as a lineman, a supervisor, and later for a company that responded to disaster areas for repair of power lines.

You can see an example of this type of field trial work in this video of the national championships. https://youtu.be/r9FukGHrhm0

Enjoy the conversation with Mike Jackson!

Season 2 of Agile Digital Business starts with the next episode of the show.

Value in standing while livestreaming or recording videos

2019-08-22 by Vickie Maris Leave a Comment

When you picture that your video camera (or webcam) is your audience, it makes sense to stand while recording direct-to-camera (talking head) videos or livestream broadcasts. Whether your learners are brand followers or students in online courses, the energy you deliver while being on your feet helps convey the points you are making in your instruction.

If you stand while teaching in a classroom or while giving a talk at conference, it makes sense to stand while livestreaming or recording a course video.

I know it can be tempting to be seated while recording, especially if you’re using a webcam or a teleprompter, but your viewers of your livestream or your online students say, “thanks” for getting on your feet if you are able.

Your video doesn’t have to be perfect. No one is perfect when giving a talk at a conference, or when teaching in a classroom. It’s OK to be you – and less than perfect – when recording a video as well.

Standing while recording audio podcast

When recording my podcast, Agile Digital Business, I stand. It helps me keep my energy lifted, which I hope is making the show more interesting for you as you listen. Here’s an example of an episode. This particular file is an audio file – turned – video that is located out on my YouTube channel. In this episode, I’m launching Season 2 of the podcast on the topic of voice and voice search (smart speaker uses; voice-activated assistants, voice search marketing).

Another instructor who stands while recording video

One of the people I love to learn from, and who teaches on video while on his feet, is Brendan Burchard, creator of the Total Product Blueprint. Check his videos on YouTube to see many examples. I haven’t always stood for every video I’ve recorded, but I’ve been newly motivated to follow this practice.

Below is a one-minute example to give you an idea of what it can be like to stand while you livestream or record a video for your course or website.

Whitney Kilgore Talks About Learning Experience Design | Part 2

Online courses, blended learning, & open educational resources

Whitney Kilgore, PhD, of iDesign, shares her perspective on blended learning, open educational resources, and more of her insights on the design of learning experiences in this Part 2 of my interview with her. This is Episode 7 of Agile Digital Business (formerly, Online Course Connections) podcast.

Whitney provides pointers on how to guide a subject matter expert (SME) who often wants to lead with content. “In the online space, it’s important to break content into chunks.”

“A design team will help you break content into chunks and help you make sure that the learning goals and objectives align with the assessments. [The designers] will help you make sure that the path between the two points for gaining knowledge are clear.”

Whitney also touches on the concept of co-creating a syllabus with the students of your class. When doing so in an academic environment, you would want to maintain the academic standards required for accreditation.

I will add here that you could also co-create a syllabus with the customers of your business who will be in your course.

Jeff Jennings of Missouri S & T Discusses the Course Building Blocks Blueprint

“Building Blocks Blueprint” tool for mapping learning events to learning outcomes & assessments

Jeff Jennings is with Missouri S & T, and is a former middle school teacher turned instructional designer. In Episode 6 of the show, Jeff and I talk about learning experience design and working with faculty in the mapping of a course plan.

Jeff earned his MS degree in educational leadership through an online program at the institution that is now called Trident University. He did his graduate work while still serving in the military in the US Army.

We talk about building blocks of course design and he walks through a tool that the course design team at Missouri S & T uses for helping faculty design their instruction. We touch on the importance of updated course descriptions and how to map learning events to assessments in a course and to the learning outcomes.

Missouri S & T is focused on getting courses aligned with the building blocks we discuss in this episode.

Jeff and I met when he was leading a workshop at the 2016 OLC Accelerate Conference with his colleague Amy Skyles, who has also been a guest on Online Course Connections (see Episode 5). Note that the podcast has been rebranded to Agile Digital Business.

The tool that Jeff and Amy presented in the workshop at OLC is the Building Blocks blueprint. Jeff elaborated on the use of the tool.

Creative Methods for Moving Laboratory Classes Online | Amy Skyles of Missouri S & T

Redesigning the laboratory classroom for online or blended

Amy Skyles, Missouri S & T, is my guest on Episode 5 of Agile Digital Business (formerly, Online Course Connections).

She and her colleagues are helping you keep students on pace towards graduation by working with instructors to create alternatives for the design and teaching of lab classes. She tells us about the reasons behind decisions at her institution and how they are answering faculty, student and community questions about online and blended lab classrooms.

The design team at Missouri S & T doesn’t refer to their courses as “online labs.” They are instead referred to as DELTA Labs. DELTA is an acronym for Delivering Experiential Labs to All.

Another service of the design team is to help instructors come up with a plan for the situation when a student with a disability is in an online course that has a lab component that they would be managing from their remote location.

They also help come up with a plan for disposal of materials from lab experiments. Disposal, even in micro scale, can become an issue if the lab kits are delivered to over 1000 students in the same dormitory.

You’ll also get to learn about The Laboratory Redesign Handbook, which includes tips and tricks in Part 1 and the “How to get it done” in Part 2.

The handbook is available for purchase as a pdf download or as a bound hard copy. You can learn about the handbook and other resources at the website:  http://edtech.msu.edu/teach

Amy mentions the Teaching and Learning With Technology Conference which is held in March every year at Missouri S & T during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Here is the link to check out the conference on the campus in Rolla, Missouri. http://tlt.mst.edu/

Personal Brand Entrepreneur Resources in Youpreneur Academy

Online educational environment of membership site

You can join other entrepreneurs and business owners in the Youpreneur community hosted by Chris Ducker. In this episode, I share a very unscripted perspective of life as a Youpreneur, and the support that comes from being an engaged member of the community.

Previously, the site was only opened to new members a few times a year, but it is now open throughout the year.

If you’re an entrepreneur who is building a personal brand, running a small business, or you’re dreaming of doing either of those things in the future, you will want to take a peek in to this community.

This podcast, now rebranded to Agile Digital Business, (formerly Online Course Connections), has come to be, in part, because of the support and accountability I’ve gained from my engagement in the Youpreneur community both online and offline.

Thanks for listening to the show and for sharing Episode 4 in your social media channels with your friends and followers. The links to Youpreneur in this post are my affiliate link provided by Chris Ducker and his team.

Hope to see you inside the Youpreneur community if you’re not already there! [Episode 4; revised Aug. 5, 2019]

Three Ways to Approach the Design of Your First Course | Vickie Maris

Techniques for Developing Course Content for Platforms Like Udemy

Here are three approaches to developing content for an online course platform such as Udemy.

I describe techniques I have used including:

  • Creating an online course around a topic in which you have a high level of expertise and passion.
  • Invite a content expert(s) to join you in developing a course. This person could also serve in an on-camera role for course videos.
  • Journal your experience in learning a subject, and then create course content from your notes and experiences.

These techniques are ones I’ve used in courses I’ve created at the university as well as in my courses on Udemy and other platforms. [Episode 2; revised July 29, 2019]
